In a nutshell, the most critically cool thing it can do is link audio recordings you make as you jot written notes to the actual text you're writing. And it can later all be indexed on a PC, and played back on the computer. Or by clicking on the notepad.

Where To Start?
1. The Smartpen store is now live and taking orders
2. The Smartpen blog is active. Read recent posts from the Smartpen team
3. You can access a number of video’s showcasing the Livescribe technology here
4. Introducing Livescribe Pulse Smartpen to Australia – the background
5. We’ve outlined a number of our development ideas that you can review.
Livescribe Pulse Smartpen Explained
The Livescribe Pulse Smartpen is a computer within a pen that captures handwriting and simultaneously records audio and synchronises it to the writing. Users can simply tap on their notes to replay what was recorded from the exact moment they were writing, so they never miss a word they hear, write, or speak.
The real magic, though, is that the pen simultaneously records every sound and connects the resulting audio to the captured image. All the captured material is timeline based, so turning back to any page in your notes and tapping the pen on a word will restart your audio at the precise moment your wrote that word.
With Paper Replay, users can tap on their notes written on paper to hear exactly what was said. They can also fast forward, rewind, jump ahead, pause, and even speed up or slow down their audio recordings using controls printed on the bottom of each page.
How could you use the technology?
Coaching a sales person
For most sales managers, being an effective coach is tough, particularly if you’re leading a large number of sales people. Livescribe Pulse Smartpen gives Sales Managers an additional tool to help coach and develop sales people.
Livescribe can be used by salespeople to capture how they present and how they handle customer objections or questions. The power of Livescribe is that the technology allows a sales manager to replay a sales presentation and determine:
- Whether the sales person is presenting your products and services properly
- They are dealing with questions and objections effectively – are they making the right decisions based on what the customer or prospect is telling them.
David Thorpe, Sales Manager for Service Central. “It’s incredibly powerful to be able to listen to their presentation, and in conjunction with their hand written notes, analyse the critical decisions they make during a sales presentation. This has taken sales coaching to the next level for us”.
Media buyers
Media buyers need to move fast to capture the best slots for their clients. Rather than waiting for follow-up emails or faxes, the media buyer can capture the verbal commitment and the customer signature and get moving whilst the slots are still available.
Technical meetings
Livescribe allows a user to capture detailed, intense technical meetings, including sketches, concept ideas etc and link this to what was spoken at the time. The power of Livescribe is that the user doesn’t need to worry about missing key technical points as the pen has captured this information for them.
Executive meetings
The bane of most executives is either being stuck taking the minutes of a meeting, or worried that they’ve missed a key point, the delegation of a task, or a group agreement. Livescribe allows an executive to capture what is said in a meeting, linked to his or her written notes, and then either quickly turns this into minutes or loads the data into Livescribe desktop so a PA or assistant can then transcribe the information.
